About us / ASE Background

Joint Stock Company Atomstroyexport was established in 1998 by the Decision of the Ministry of Atomic Power with a view to expanding the export activity of Russian manufacturing companies.

The practical experience of more than 25 years amassed by two large Russian organizations implementing NPP construction abroad, namely JSC Atomenergoproekt and VPO Zarubezhatomenergostroy, afforded the basis for Atomstroyexport foundation. The implementation of intergovernmental agreements on rendering assistance to Eastern European and other countries in nuclear power engineering development was the focal point in the activity of the companies mentioned above resulting in the construction of nearly thirty nuclear power units and ten research centers. Moreover, a close partnership with more than 50 leading organizations was established on a global basis.

The JSC Atomenergoexport and VPO Zarubezhatomenergostroy contribution to the production and international cooperation development was marked by the Golden Mercury Award in 1980 while the premium quality of the supplied equipment was recognized in 1982 with an international Best Technology Prize. The Fourth International African Award for the extension of economic collaboration with African countries followed in 1983.

After being assigned all the respective agreements and contracts, Atomstroyexport arranges its work under market conditions and sound competition.

In its foreign policy the company relies on substantial and unique experience accumulated during the Soviet era as well as vast engineering potential enjoyed by Russia in the nuclear field nowadays.

Half-a-century-long period in the development of nuclear power and global partnership can be characterized by the following milestones:

·  first nuclear power plant in the world with a total power capacity of 5MW was built in Obninsk and commissioned on June 27, 1954 thus spurring cooperation in the peaceful use of atomic energy among Eastern European countries, India, Egypt and others;

·  a year after the first nuclear plant commissioning intergovernmental agreements with GDR, Czechoslovakia, Poland, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, Yugoslavia and Egypt were signed with the subsequent setting up of research centers on the spots;

·  first 1956 intergovernmental agreements on providing assistance in pilot nuclear power plants construction in GDR and Czechoslovakia which were a part of a 10-year program intended for a quest of an optimum modification of a nuclear reactor for commercial NPPs;

·  the next stage covers a 20-year period (1965-1986) and is marked with number of agreements within COMECON area on NPP construction by new VVER designs. The nuclear cooperation range was unparalleled, with customer countries including GDR, Bulgaria, Hungary, Finland, Czechoslovakia, Romania, Poland, Libya, Cuba and DPRK. The scope of works comprised siting, design, equipment supply, erection, pre-commissioning and commissioning activities as well as operation maintenance;

·  after nearly a 15-year break in NPP construction a lot of countries stepped on a path of nuclear development and Russia participated in effectuation of these forward-looking programs. The demand for Russian technologies in the global market is determined by state of the art scientific and design solutions ensuring safe and reliable operation of nuclear power stations.

Foreign Research-and-Development centers established with USSR support under respective intergovernmental agreements

·  China. In 1958 the first research reactor was commissioned at the Nuclear Physics Institute. In  1960 an Institute of Physics in Lanzhou and 18 MeV U-150 deuterium power cyclotron were built.

·  Czechoslovakia. In 1959 a research VVR-S-type reactor with a thermal power of 4MW was built in the town of Rzhezh.

·  GDR. In 1960 a U-120 cyclotron and a VVR-S-type research reactor with 2MW of a thermal power capacity as well as physical and chemical laboratories at the Institute for Nuclear Research were built in Dresden.

·  Yugoslavia.  In 1960 a 10MW heavy water reactor was built at the Nuclear Research Center as well as radiochemical and other laboratories.

·  Egypt. In 1961 a 2MW research reactor was built.

·  Bulgaria. In 1961 an Institute of Nuclear Physics housing IRT reactor and radiochemical laboratory started to operate in a place called Pancevo.

·  Romania. In 1962 a U-120 cyclotron and a 2MW VVR-S research reactor were built at the Nuclear Research Institute in Bucharest.

·  Hungary. In 1962 an Institute for Nuclear Research and personnel training center with 2MW VVR-S reactor were set up in Debrecen.

·  Iraq, DPRK, Ghana, Indonesia. In 1963 works on construction of research-and-development centers with conventional equipment were initiated in these countries. The centers were commissioned in 1965-1966 in Iraq and DPRK while the construction works had to be aborted in Ghana and Indonesia because of political events.

·  Poland. 1975 saw the commissioning of VVR-S research reactor at the Nuclear Research Institute as well as 40MW Maria research reactor constructed by Polish design with participation of Soviet companies.

·  Libya. A Tajura research center housing a research reactor, neutron generator, Tokmak thermodynamic plant and a number of physical laboratories was commissioned in 1984.

   

JSC Atomstroyexport is the only company in the world concurrently constructing 5 power generating units abroad. Each of the implemented projects is unique while every nuclear power plant being constructed has its own intrinsic features. However, the highest quality standards along with safety requirements make up the common ground for the projects.

JSC Atomstroyexport is a leading Russian organization within Rosatom structure implementing contracts under intergovernmental agreements on the construction of nuclear power plants abroad. Its main scope of activity lies in the construction management as well as upgrading of the nuclear plants complying with all the international requirements.

Atomstroyexport has been entrusted with important functions. While standing for the Russian nuclear power field abroad, the company promotes advanced NPP construction technologies. ASE strategic tasks are aimed at gaining firm positions in the world nuclear power market.
