For more than 45 years our country has been rendering the wide-range technical assistance to other countries in development of their own scientific and technical potential in the field of peaceful use of atomic energy. This work was started in 1955, when the former USSR entered into the first agreements with a number of countries. These agreements were aimed at rendering the scientific and technical assistance in creation of the nuclear research centers. In 1956 the agreements were signed on technical assistance in construction of the first pilot nuclear power plants in Czechoslovakia and GDR.
In line with the extensive development of cooperation with foreign countries in the field of peaceful use of atomic energy, in 1973 the two associations were established, namely: a specialized foreign trade export-import association "Atomenergoexport" and an industrial association "Soyuzglavzagranatomenergo" (later on known as "Zarubezhatomenergostroy").
Implementation of the Intergovernmental Agreements on providing technical assistance to East European countries and Finland in development of nuclear power engineering formed the basis for "Atomenergoexport" and "Zarubezhatomenergostroy" activities in the 1970s and 1980s. During these years, about 30 nuclear power units and 10 nuclear research centers were constructed abroad with the technical assistance of these associations. Besides, equipment purchased abroad under "Atomenergoexport" import contracts has been successfully operated at all nuclear power plants constructed in Russia.
Over the years of their activities, the associations have established close business relations with more than 50 leading companies on all continents, from Europe to North and South Americas, Asia, Africa, and Australia. They include such world-known corporations as "Siemens AG", "Westinghouse Electric Corporation", "Framatome", ABB, "Electricite de France", "Ansaldo", "Philips", and others.
The contribution made by "Atomenergoexport" and "Zarubezhatomenergostroy" to the productive development and international cooperation was marked by "Gold Mercury International Award" (1980). Another "International Trophy for Technology" was awarded in 1982, thus confirming high quality of equipment supplied by the associations. In 1983 the 4th Africa Award for development of economic cooperation with the countries of Africa was given.
By consent of MINATOM Management, in 1998 the two associations merged into one company, Joint Stock Company ATOMSTROYEXPORT, which is a legal successor of "Atomenergoexport" and "Zarubezhatomenergostroy" for all signed agreements, contracts and deals.
