Presently the cooperation between Russia and Bulgaria in the filed of peaceful use of nuclear power is carried out within the frameworks of the Intergovernmental Agreement dated May 19, 1995 on the basis of the contracts in force with NPP Kozloduy, decisions of the VII meeting of the Intergovernmental Russian-Bulgarian commission on commercial–and–economic, scientific-and-technological cooperation as well as results of negotiations between the delegations of the Ministry of the Russian Federation on Atomic Energy and Ministry of power engineering and energy resources of the Republic of Bulgaria, which took place in May 29-31, 2002 in Sofia.
Continuation of the Intergovernmental Commission activity is considered as an important step on the way to determine first priority tasks for the development of nuclear power of Bulgaria including the perspectives for further participation of the Russian organizations in the activities aimed to maintain safe operation of power units 3-6 of NPP Kozloduy.
In May 2002 the Russian and Bulgarian organizations completed their activities on the improvement of emergency localization system at power units 3 and 4.
Upon results of the Mission of IAEA experts in June 2002, the improvement performed was positively assessed. It was noted that the safety level of NPP Kozloduy power units 3 and 4 conformed to up-to-date international norms and requirements.
The results of the activities performed by the Russian organizations at NPP Kozloduy power units 3 and 4 were reported at the International Nuclear Forum in Varna in June 28-30, 2002.
In compliance with the schedule the activities for the improvement of NPP Kozloduy power units 5 and 6 are still going on.
The working subgroup "Nuclear Power Engineering" established within the frameworks of the Russian-Bulgarian Intergovernmental Commission has started its work in order to coordinate the joint activity of the Parties with regard to issues related to the operation of power units of NPP Kozloduy,
One of the most perspective tendencies of cooperation is a possible construction of a new NPP in the Republic of Bulgaria.
The Bulgarian Party is presently working on the preparation of terms of reference for the development of the feasibility study for the construction of a new NPP.
