After signing of General Framework Agreement in the end of 2001 AOMSTROYEXPORT has started implementation of a series of contracts for NPP "Kudankulam" with two VVER -1000 reactor units.

The nuclear power plants with VVER-440 reactors built in Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia and Hungary in the 1970s and 1980s fully conformed to the reliability and safety standards set for the nuclear power plants at the time when they were built. These nuclear power plants were not inferior in reliability and safety to those built in the same period in Western European countries and the United States.

Kozloduy NPP in Bulgaria, Bohunice NPP in Slovakia, Dukovany NPP in Czechia, Paks NPP in Hungary still demonstrate reliable and stable operation. However, considering the ever growing attention towards environmental protection and elimination of possible causes of emergency events, ATOMSTROYEXPORT requested the leading design institutes of Russia to develop and implement the modernization programs for the above power units.

Loviisa NPP in Finland, which was built on the Russian design basis and incorporated equipment from third countries, is successfully operated. In terms of its performance and economic characteristics, in particular, the load factor and safety level, it ranks among the world's best, despite the fact that it was built more than 20 years ago.

ATOMSTROYEXPORT constantly follows technological updating of the NPP designs developed. The Russian design companies develop new NPP designs which take into account the advanced international safety standards for reactor installations and apply the design approaches aimed at timely prevention and elimination of the emergency consequences.

Special attention is given to fitting out nuclear power plants with sophisticated computer-aided process control systems and enhancing quality of the safety-related equipment and that for nuclear waste processing and disposal.

The next step in this direction was development of 640 MW power unit and new generation of 1000 MW power units. These designs most fully meet current safety requirements and that was confirmed by IAEA experts and representatives of other authoritative international agencies.

ATOMSTROYEXPORT has started implementation of the contracts for two 1,000 MW power units in China. Similar design approaches will be applied for construction of Bushehr NPP in Iran.

In December 2000 the Contract Draft was initialed by the Ukranian Customer and the Consortium of Atomstroyexport and Framatome ANP. It defines the scope and costs of completion and modernization of NPP Khmelnitsk Unit 2 and NPP Rovno Unit 4.

Implementation of the Project will be started after signing of the Credit Agreement by the Government of Ukraine with the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development and EU Commission of Atomic Energy.

One can therefore speak with confidence about ATOMSTROYEXPORT long-term business program for the next 10 to 15 years.
