Germany – Rheinsberg NPP

Rheinsberg NPP (commissioned in May, 1966) – was the first nuclear power plant constructed abroad with technical assistance from Soviet companies. The project was based on the technological solutions adopted from Novovoronezh NPP and the main equipment, such as 70 MW water-cooled water-moderated reactor (VVER), reactor coolant pump, a turboset as well as support equipment, was supplied by the Soviet side while some other items including vertical steam generators were manufactured in GDR. A working draft along with construction, erection and commissioning works were carried out in close partnership with GDR. Experts from Soviet design, adjustment and other agencies together with equipment manufacturers largely contributed to the construction works. The plant commissioning marked the outset of commercial nuclear energy use in GDR. The Rheinsberg NPP operation for more than 20 years proved a reliable performance of the equipment and the plant in general. The power station soon turned into a nuclear research-and-development hub, assuming the status of training and personnel skills maintenance center after the commissioning of a simulator in 1974. More than 2400 specialists including those from the COMECON member states have been trained at Rheinsberg NPP until 1979. The plant was shut down in 1990.
