Slovakia (Czechoslovakia) – Bohunice NPP

Bohunice A-1 NPP in Western Slovakia commissioned in the end of 1972 was supplied with a KS-150 heavy-water pressure tube reactor. The reactor plant design was worked out by the Institute for theoretical and experimental physics that served as a scientific adviser throughout the construction stage. The detailed design of Bohunice A-1 NPP was developed by Czech organizations (Skoda design office) with technical support of Leningrad department of Teploelektroproekt. Almost all the equipment was designed and manufactured by Czech companies. The Czech side has fully met its commitments under intergovernmental agreement related to the development of heavy-water nuclear reactors but the latter were too complicated in terms of technology and could not be utilized for building commercial nuclear power plants. Bohunice A-1 was shut down in 1977. Later on a nuclear scientific and engineering center was established at Bohunice NPP incorporating Institute of NPP operation (VUJE), Bohunice V-1, V-2 and personnel training center. Czechoslovakia was the third COMECON state (after GDR and Bulgaria) to embark on a large-scale nuclear development program. In 1972 it was decided to further extend the growth of atomic industry in Czechoslovakia making PWRs the basis for national nuclear industry for the next 15-20 years. Bohunice V-1 located near the first NPP exemplified a result of the Program implementation. The construction works started in February, 1973 and Soviet companies were actively involved in reactor hall design, equipment supply, contract supervision, erection and commissioning activities. The first power unit was put into operation on March 30, 1979, and the second one followed in May, 1980. After the commissioning of Bohunice V-2 the nuclear power plants accounted for nearly 10% of the overall energy production in Czechoslovakia. 1977 saw the commencement of Bohunice V-2 construction with VVER-440/V-213 reactor type.
